Why originality is dead?

This is my conversation with a very talented young drummer who lives nearby and I asked him about his future plans in music. It just proves why originality is dead…why don’t we have tons of great, unique and original artists like in the 70s, 80s, 90s…here comes the shocking reality:

“I am playing with a band who are really focussed and commercially aware…its looking promising like it might take off so they will always be a priority, but we literally practice every month or so and thats only the odd evening or gig

Im not in a position to be in an originals band who are looking to “make it”…its very expensive to do that – lots of studio costs, paying for rehearsal spaces, lots of petrol money and very little (if any!!) money from gigs

If you’re an originals band who are trying to make it big then i probably can’t really afford it because i don’t have the money to be paying for rehearsals and sessions for two bands if you know what i mean? But if you’re a covers band playing paid gigs to pubs and stuff then im definitely in! I could use a bit of extra money and it sounds like great fun!”

So lets analyze some of his sentences:
“I am playing with a band who are really focussed and commercially aware….we literally practice every month or so and thats only the odd evening”
WHAT???? Practicing every month is nothing. It’s the level of a small town’s wedding band…an original band with serious ideas must practice at least 2-3x a week…absolutely unserious level and attitude. Proper waste of time…

“Im not in a position to be in an originals band who are looking to “make it””
WHAT???? That’s why real artists are artists…real artists want to create something new…real artist want to make it…not copy and paste someone else’s art…

“its very expensive to do that”
WHAT???? Yes it’s very expensive. It’s very bloody expensive to do anything. Any kind of business, developing an idea is expensive. It was always expensive. You have to go out, find a job, work, make money and invest into your own art and make it.

“But if you’re a covers band playing paid gigs to pubs and stuff then im definitely in!”
WHAT???? A young talented player wants to play paid gigs in pubs with a cover band because it’s EASIER.
